Hello There

Hello there %$firstname$%,

Can you believe we’re in the final days of August already? I does seem as if we’ve been on ‘Fast Forward’ this year doesn’t it? One of the things I love to do in August is to be at home when most of the UK is away on holiday! It frees up local parking, roads, the trains and also frees up mental energy to start something new.

I’ve been plotting and planning towards a new launch in November, a half-day event in October as well as a private dining experience I’m introducing. It’s easy to think “Oh I’ll just take a moment here and there to write that or plan that” whatever it is. Well, I find %$firstname$% if I give myself a chunk of dedicated time with no distractions, I come up with better ideas more quickly. Giving yourself the gift of time to do your best work is so strategic. It takes you at least, I think they say, 6 minutes to resume the mental flow you get into if you allow yourself to be distracted with a phone call or email. I put my timer on and switch all my gizmos off.

With less distractions, there’s more flow. I believe something magical happens when you set yourself a task, give yourself a chunk of time and then press ‘Go’ in your head. We often say we don’t like being boxed in with deadlines but I find when I create my own for myself, that’s different, I thrive!

My niece Grace and nephew Fraser are going with the flow and leaping with joy here – Fraser was 18 the other day and Grace passed her A’Levels and got into her Uni of choice. So proud of them both.

Thank you for taking the time to read this eZine as I’m sure you have so much vying for your attention. I hope the ideas and suggestions help you reflect and to show up, sparkle and be heard even more at work.

Warmly to you %$firstname$%,

Releasing an Audio Book – it’s About Time!

After years of being asked “When are you going to turn your book into an audio book Kay?” I now have!

The interesting thing about making the decision to do this Kay is that when enough people tell you the same thing, pay attention. They’re on to something and see something for you which often you’ve not seen, yet.

You’ll be able to access all the information, from A to Z, in your car, on the running machine and – if you’re like me – when you’re walking the dog! The audios are now in production with music being added, coughs and trip ups being removed (and the odd swear word) and touches of musical fairy dust too – I’m excited to share it with you when it’s ready.

As soon as it’s available I’ll make sure you have early access to the downloadable audio book, with a special Introductory Offer. And 3, 2, 1 ‘Action’.

How to get your emails opened

Grab them by the eyeballs

Which email would you rather open first ‘More Bad News’ or ‘Quick Update on XYZ for You’? What about ‘Tax Time Again’ or ‘Ways to Save You Money’?

Emailing. It’s such a key piece in our day-to-day lives. We fire a quick email response off or “shoot from the fingertip” and it’s so easy to forget that we’re not top of the list for the person receiving it. They, like us, have loads of things clamouring for their attention. So how do we stay on their radar – how do we help them to help us by opening our messages and acting on them?

First off, by grabbing them by the eyeballs and making our email title interesting and compelling.

  • ‘Quick question’ is a great one. If it is a quick question, say it is. Put it in the title.

  • Another one is ‘You’ll know the answer to this one’. People love to know that you think they’ll know and, in general, we all like to help each other.

  • ‘Just found this out’ – if you have, say it in the title. New information is always interesting and if you have some, say so.

  • ‘Only 2 days to go’ – if there’s a time constraint or deadline you’re all working on, put it out there in the title.

  • ‘An opportunity for you’ – again, if it is, say so. You know yourself you’re more likely to open this one than if it was titled ‘Learning and Development Plans’. Blah, blah, blah.

Working with career women showing them how to be more engaging, how to grab and keep attention, this is such a key piece. You may have the hottest news, the greatest opportunity, the most important instruction but if your email is scanned along with the hundreds of others and left until later – or never – then, so what? Some people don’t even put a title in the subject line and that is close to asking to be ignored.

So how do you decide on the title? By stopping for a second and considering what will compel or attract the person on the receiving end of your message. Consider what your reader wants or what they want to avoid.

Email is an amazing tool, so useful, simple and helps us keep in touch, get information across the world in a second. It’s also a great way to really upset and confuse people. The language you use, the layout, the sign off, all these pieces are key to getting your message across in a way that works for you, that helps you to be understood and gets you the response or reaction you want.

The first step is to get your day-to-day emails opened.

I’d love to hear what you think. You can leave me a comment or a note here.

J is a team-leader in a UK-based corporate and we started working together as her Director was concerned at how J was expressing herself in both meetings and in emails and the negative effects it was having on her team. She was described as “muddled and unsure.”

“Kay’s style is really informative and participative and within the first half an hour together she started to highlight to me some of the ways I was expressing myself which was really holding me back. Instead of making me feel in the wrong or uncomfortable, she immediately put me at my ease.

Together we worked on ways I could handle situations and difficult people differently and she really highlighted the power of my language and how it can be used for effect. I’m now much more aware of how I speak and what I write and how to structure my approach so it has more effect. I’m much more confident now and I think and plan what I’m going to say. My team has noticed the difference in me and how I’m more convincing and confident.”

Show Up; Sparkle & Be Heard Podcast

Each week you can pick up tips, steps, strategies and mindsets from my snappy podcast “Show Up; Sparkle & Be Heard”.

They’re designed to give you instant ideas, tips and you can listen on the move, on the train or – as one of my clients does – when swimming! They’re downloaded by women from the UK to Australia, from Vietnam to Venezuela.

If I can give you something which will help you straight away, wherever you are, an insight or a tip or two on something you’re struggling with at work, just drop a note here to support@kaywhite.com. I’ll look at crafting a podcast for you to help in the coming weeks.

Here’s a recent one about How & Why To Just Let Go. Sometimes, just like a holiday, letting go makes you so much more effective.

Kay combines private one-on-one, VIP mentoring with group mentoring, speaking and hosts her annual 3-day Live Event ’Show Up; Sparkle & Be Heard LIVE”. She also hosts her weekly podcast radio show downloadable from her site or on iTunes.

Using insights from her own +20 year corporate career, Kay shows her clients how to plan out their next moves in their business or career. She also shows women how ‘accessorise’ and enhance their day-to-day interactions along the way making them more comfortable, compelling and engaging. They boost their income, prospects and attract more lucrative opportunities as a result as Kay shows her clients how to add true, personal sparkle. Both to themselves and to what they say.

Working with Kay, her clients discover how to be confident, assertive, attract and keep attention and then ask for and get what they want. It’s a learnable skill to ask for what you want, to persuade, influence and get other people engaged and into action – both in writing and face-to-face. Kay’s developed step-by-step systems for her clients to learn, follow and use the steps every day and everywhere.

Known as the Savvy & Influential Communication Expert, Kay is the Author of the international #1 bestseller ‘The A to Z of Being Understood’ and Founder of Way Forward Solutions Ltd, a multiple 6-figure private company. Kay annually hosts a 3-day Live Event in London for professional women: Show Up; Sparkle & Be Heard LIVE. With her straightforward and easy manner, Kay regularly features in magazines and publications. She’s a featured expert in GLAMOUR Magazine in “The Nice Girl’s Guide to Playing Hardball” and a regular guest blogger for We Are The City, a hub network and content site for professional women.

During her 20-year corporate career, Kay worked in the City of London and in Paris to Director level as part of a successful, mainly male, fast-paced team of global insurance brokers. Negotiating multi-million pound, industrial property insurance contracts around the world, she learned (often by her own mistakes along the way) how to – and crucially how not to – get heard, valued and noticed, for the right reasons. Some of her ex-colleagues have become clients and Kay still speaks French – now more enthusiastically than fluently.

Kay and her husband live close to London with their 3 rescue sighthounds. A lot of Kay’s inspiration comes from walking ‘the hounds’ as she calls them – whatever the UK weather – early in the mornings in the local countryside.
