Hello there %$firstname$%,

Well, here we are in 2015 and already it’s been quite a ride!  We had a quiet, low-key and delicious Christmas with my sister and her ‘kiddies’ ie 17 and 19 year olds.  Snowy was working here and there in London between the Christmas and New Year holidays and me doing the same here at Sparkle Central.  Quietly.

‘Step Away From Your Mac’ was one of my mantras and I did.  Lots of hound-walking, TV-watching, eating, sipping Rioja and chatting to friends and family.  It made me realise how much I’ve changed and it’s about evolving isn’t it %$firstname$%?  I used to want to be here, there and everywhere over Christmas and I believe it’s less about slowing down and more about realising what you need and want – rather than what you ‘should’ be doing.

To start the year with the intention of both adding to my skills and learning from and with other women, 2 sparkly clients – Helena and Samar and I attended a Voice for Business course on Sunday.  It was so interesting. We learned about voice projection, breathing and – despite star-jumping and whooping on a Sunday morning – it’s made me even more aware of pace and emphasis.  Crikey %$firstname$% – and it’s only the 2nd week of January!

I believe it’s all about evolving, expanding and sparkling as you truly are.  It’s what I believe is the difference, which makes the difference, to your career success, your earning power and your personal relationships. Shine on.  Oh and here’s Miss DeeDee who believes rolling in Fox’s, hmm, poo makes you sparkle.  I disagree.

Warm and ever-sparkly wishes %$firstname$%,

“It’s really good to take yourself outside of your comfort zone.”

“Kay has a way of engaging everybody and it making it feel like a very sort of personal exercise so I’m aware that there are many women in the room but it doesn’t feel like you’re one of many. Kay makes it feel personal.

It feels like you can take a risk and throw caution to the wind and move forward by being open and I think because Kay models openness, it gives us permission to be open as well. One of my biggest Aha moments was when we were doing an exercise on describing what we do. Kay gave us 3 phrases which meant that for the first time I was able to really say, out aloud, what I do and it goes so far beyond what I’ve ever said before. Everyone sat up and listened as I said it!

It’s about just taking that step forward and feeling more confident in doing so. It’s really good to take yourself outside of your comfort zone and step into something different because boy, do you learn. Fast.

Planning 2015 for how and where you are now

“Mind your Language” is a great piece of advice, truly mind it. Think about it.  Think about the effect it has on you and then on those around you as you use it.  As a self-confessed WordNerd it’s one of my passions that my clients really “get” how important the words and phrases are they choose and then use.   If you already have a sense you could be more influential, more engaging and inspiring to other people, then changing and updating your ‘script’ transforms the way you connect with people.

A few years ago, I read an article by John La Valle http://www.purenlp.com/ and John is, I believe, a true word-nerd.  A real wizard with the use of language and the difference it makes.  He wrote an article about changing our New Year’s Resolutions and swapping them for New Year’s Evolutions.

ResolutionsEvery year when someone asks me “so Kay, are you making any New Year’s Resolutions?” I take John’s advice and tell them “yes, but I make New Year’s Evolutions”.

Think about the word Resolution – looking in my trusty dictionary, it means “a firm decision to do or not to do something.  The action of solving a problem, dispute or contentious matter.”

When you pull it apart, re-solution becomes a solution, redone.  You know when you say it there’s a bit of resistance there.  Something you should be doing as opposed to something you want to do.  Something you’ve tried to do before and are trying to do again.

New Year EvolutionIt’s so common to make a resolution to eat less, exercise more, spend less, save more, work less, be with family more – or sometimes the opposite!  You get the idea, though.

Now, think about the word Evolution – When you think of planning and committing to New Year’s Evolutions, there’s a different feel, a different energy about them with that word.  Again, from my trusty dictionary “Evolution – the gradual development of something.  Current senses stem from a notion of “opening out” and “unfolding” giving a rise to a general sense of development”. Open yourself up to who you are now and what you want, now.

Now with the word Evolution (remember, we only tweaked 2 letters) there’s a more forward motion to it, more of a sense of “Ok, for where I am now and for how I’ve developed now and what I want in my life now, this is what I want for my life in 2015”.

Try putting down 5 New Year’s Evolutions for yourself and before you do, take a moment with these 5 steps to think about how you are “opening out”, “unfolding” and “developing”.

  1. Think about how your life was 2 years ago – at the beginning of 2013 – then think about what’s going on now and how things have evolved for you.
  2. What are the major changes that have happened? (pssst – there will be some major changes, I promise you.  It’s one of the few things we can guarantee in life, that things change.  We choose how we respond to those changes.)
  3. Next, consider what’s happening in each of these areas of your life – home / work / relationships /career / finances and ask yourself “what do I want to have more of AND less of in these areas now?”
  4. Here’s where your “New Year’s Evolutions” start to form.  From where you are now, for the person you are now, for what you’re doing now.
  5. Put down the following words and then finish the sentence at least 5 times “For what I want now, in 2015 I will….”.

So, with two letters tweaked your Resolutions have become your 2015 Evolutions.  Oh, and even if you don’t think you’ve changed much, around you the landscape will have, you industry, market, colleagues will have.  That changes you anyway.  How have you evolved though, that’s the question?

As Oprah Winfrey says: “The whole point of being alive is to evolve into the complete person you were intended to be.”

My main ‘Aha’ is being able to articulate my professional value. I can already think of some personal things which are going on with me as well and link them. As a Mentor Kay’s generous and her advice, tips and stories are practical and pragmatic. I know exactly how I’m going to be able to put what I’ve learned into practice.

I think you owe yourself the chance to be able to sit in a room full of like-minded, intelligent women in a non-competitive environment and share your and learn from others’ experiences.

Nurture Yourself

One of the keys of being able to maintain the pace I have as I’ve grown a multiple 6-figure business and stayed sane (and happily married) has been pausing.  Slowing down.  Often.  Counter-intuitive I know and yet, the key.  Taking time out.  Taking longer to do things, and yet getting more of what’s important done.

Before my 2014 Live Event I took myself off.  Disappeared, if you will, to a place and person I’ve found who nurtured me and gave me such a personal boost.  I recommend to you Sharon Agates.  Sharon is the founder of Agape Cottage and if you’re looking for a place to nurture yourself, take a break to rest, pause and be by yourself with Sharon’s care, give her a call and do say I sent you %$firstname$%.  She has a special Bonus pack for ‘friends and family’ and you’re invited.

I’m going there again before the 2015 March Event to take myself off and under the radar again, quietly.

sparkly bit Give yourself an instant boost in confidence!  There’s much written of course about how the mind affects the body. Well, this brilliant TED Talk by Amy Cuddy puts forward the effect the body has on the mind.

Wonder WomanThere’s a simple stance which helps you power-up when you need to.  Especially at work. So many women make themselves small or smaller when they’re presenting themselves, instead of doing what works to help you be noticed and stay ‘in the game and on the radar’.

A clue about the stance is a 1970s ‘Female Superhero’.  At only 18 minutes, watch and enjoy.  It might just change your stance in 2015 for the better.  (And, at my Live Event in March you’ll find out so much more about body language, breathing, voice, style oh, and career acceleration strategies.)

Negotiating multi-million pound, industrial property insurance contracts around the world, she learned (often by her own mistakes along the way) how to – and crucially how not to – get heard, valued and noticed, for the right reasons. Some of her ex-colleagues have become clients and Kay still speaks French – now more enthusiastically than fluently!

Kay and her husband live close to London with their 3 rescue sighthounds. A lot of Kay’s inspiration comes from walking ‘the hounds’ as she calls them – whatever the UK weather – early in the mornings in the local countryside.
